At AWAL, we love sharing our artists' stories so their paths — as individual and unique as the music they make — inspire others to pursue their own music-career goals.

Here in our "My Journey" series, our members share their stories — the challenges they’ve faced, how they’ve overcome them, the milestones they’ve achieved, and where they hope the future leads.

This week, we're speaking with NYC-based singer, songwriter, and producer Dan Miz, whose new EP, DIVE Vol. 2, drops February 23.

Tell us a little bit about how you got started in music.

My artistic journey started from an extremely young age. I started with the drums at three and then moved on towards the guitar and piano. By age 11, I was writing and producing music. I was considered a closet musician, because I was very "to myself" about it. I wanted to perfect my craft prior to putting any music out.

Where are you now in your musical journey?

Right now, I’m currently in one of the most exciting stages. I haven’t really put out music so consistently like I have been doing this year. I have a couple projects that I’m working on, and I’m super excited for the second segment of myDIVE series

What are some of the biggest challenges you've faced?

I set extremely high expectations for myself, and when I have an idea that takes time to execute, it gets a bit tough. I’m extremely eager to put my music out and make music that is different. My eagerness makes me work extremely hard to a point where cooling down isn’t an option.

What have been some of the most rewarding moments so far?

One of the most rewarding accomplishments of that happened this far was when my previous EP landed on New Music Friday in Indonesia, The Winter Chill, and Spotify‘s Top 50 charts. I was really excited to see that people were enjoying the music.

Any major milestones on the horizon?

In regards to milestones in the future I’m working on planning a tour right now for the summer. Another exciting thing that I am looking forward to is the release of my LP in late 2018.

What are your ultimate goals for your music career?

I have some goals set up for myself that have nothing to do with streaming figures and the quantity of people listening to my music. Instead, it has to do with the quality of people listening to my music. I want people to understand the messages that are within these songs.

I also want to start exploring the writing and production field. One of my strongest suits are my production and writing skills — it’d be awesome to start working with other artists.
